Health first, always

Healthy parents,
healthy puppies

Responsible breeding starts long before a litter is born. Here's how we protect the health of every puppy, and how we stand behind them.

Before breeding

Parent health testing

Every sire and dam is screened before joining our program. Results are listed on each dog's profile.

PRA-cord1 (DNA)

Screens for a form of progressive retinal atrophy that can cause blindness in Miniature Dachshunds.

Cardiac exam

An OFA-recognized heart exam to screen for congenital heart conditions.

Patellar luxation

OFA evaluation of the kneecaps for healthy, pain-free movement.

Eye exam (CAER)

Annual eye examinations by a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist.

Lafora (wire-haired)

DNA testing for Lafora disease, a neurological condition seen in Miniature Wire-haired Dachshunds.

Responsible color pairing

We never breed dapple to dapple ("double dapple"), which can cause blindness and deafness.

Caring for their back

Dachshund health tips

Keep them lean

Extra weight strains the spine. Measure meals and keep treats small.

Ramps, not jumps

Use ramps for sofas and beds, and gates on stairs, especially while growing.

Lift with support

Always support the chest and hind end so the back stays level.

Harness over collar

A harness spreads pressure across the chest instead of the neck.
