Every Dachshund is a big personality in a long, low package, but the AKC recognizes two official sizes, and choosing between them is usually the first decision a new family makes. Here is what actually changes, and what doesn't. How big do they get? Miniature Dachshunds weigh 11 pounds or less as adults. Standard Dachshunds typically weigh 16 to 32 pounds. Dogs that fall between the two are often called "tweenies". It isn't an official size, but it's very common and perfectly healthy. Temperament and energy Both sizes share the same brave, clever and affectionate nature. Standards were bred to hunt badgers and tend to be a little sturdier and more tolerant of rough play, which some families with young children appreciate.
