Dachshunds come in three coat varieties, and each one brings its own look, grooming needs and even a hint of personality difference. Smooth The classic Dachshund look: short, sleek and shiny. Smooths are the lowest-maintenance coat. A weekly wipe with a grooming mitt and the occasional bath is all they need. They do shed lightly year-round and feel the cold, so a sweater comes in handy in winter. Long-haired Long-haired Dachshunds have soft, flowing coats with feathering on the ears, chest and tail. They are often described as the calmest and most cuddly of the three. Brush two to three times a week to prevent tangles, especially behind the ears. Wire-haired Wires have a harsh outer coat, soft undercoat and that famous beard and eyebrows. They carry a bit of terrier spirit: playful, mischievous and clever. Their coat is best maintained by hand-stripping a couple of times a year, and they shed very little.
